Itinerary

Day 01:Fly from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur (91m/298ft), drive to Illam

Your 13-day trek itinerary begins with a scenic morning flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, offering sweeping views of Nepal's eastern Himalayas. Once you land in the warm plains of Jhapa, your private vehicle awaits to drive you toward Illam, the heart of Nepal's famous tea-growing region.

The journey gradually transitions from subtropical lowlands to misty mid-hills where terraced tea gardens ripple across the slopes like deep green waves. Once we arrive at Illam, you can take an easy walk through the tea estates or simply rest at your hotel and enjoy the cool hill breeze. The tranquil surroundings of Illam provide the perfect first pause before you enter the more remote and rugged terrain of the Kanchenjunga region.

As you leave Illam's misty fields, the landscape slowly changes to a mix of dense forests, hillside farms, small market towns, and distant views of high ridges.

The road journey is long, but it's filled with interesting stops along the way, including traditional Limbu villages that are known for their wooden houses, cardamom farms, and welcoming hospitality. By the time you reach Taplejung, the air becomes distinctly cooler, and the atmosphere shifts toward a classic Himalayan trekking town.

  • Max Altitude:1820m/5971ft
  • Time:5-6 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 03:Trek from Taplejung to Lali Kharka

Your first trekking day starts with a gentle ascent out of Taplejung, passing through vibrant settlements, terraced hillsides, and sub-tropical forests rich in rhododendron and chestnut trees. The trail is a beautiful mixture of stone pathways, forest shade, and hillside trails that progressively lead us toward Lali Kharka.

Sharing the path with local villagers carrying baskets, schoolchildren walking between settlements, and farmers tending to their fields, the walk is full of fun. After a gradual climb, we reach Lali Kharka, a quiet ridge-top village that is renowned for its peaceful ambiance and lovely views of the surrounding valleys.

  • Max Altitude:1880m/6167ft
  • Time:6-7 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 04:Trek from Lali Kharka to Khesewa Trek

Today's trail goes through thick forests, small farming hamlets, and terraced fields carved into the hillsides. The walk features a mix of gentle ups and downs as we traverse ridges and cross suspension bridges draped over clear mountain streams. You'll notice how quickly the environment changes: subtropical vegetation gives way to cooler forests filled with oak, rhododendron, and bamboo.

As we approach Khesewa, the first distant glimpses of Kanchenjunga's icy silhouette appear on a clear day, creating a sense of anticipation for the mountains you are trekking toward. Khesewa itself is a beautiful settlement with warm teahouses, where you rest for the night.

  • Max Altitude:960m/6430ft
  • Time:6-7 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 05:Trek from Khesewa to Pumphe Danda

From Khesewa, today we make our way toward Oumohe Danda. The trail descends through terracing farmlands and small hillside villages before it climbs up gradually through thick forests. This part of the trek is very picturesque as it passes through remote Limbu and Rai settlements, and we can often see local daily life: women weaving outdoor mats, farmers preparing fields, and elders gathering in small wooden tea shops.

After a few hours of walking, the trail takes us across a suspension bridge and then up toward Pumphe Danda. On the ridge, Pumphe Danda provides striking views of rolling hills and deep valleys stretching toward the lower Kanchenjunga region.

  • Max Altitude:1780m/5839ft
  • Time:6-7 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House

Day 06:Trek from Pumphe Danda to Yamphuding

Today's trek is a commendable combination of forested paths, traditional high-hill settlements, and wide valley views. The trail winds through bamboo groves, cardamom farms, and rhododendron forests, offering a beautiful and steady climb toward Yamphuding, which is one of the largest and most culturally rich villages on this route.

Yamphuding is a mixed community of Sherpa, Rai, and Limbu people, and the village is vibrant with traditional houses and small local shops. It also marks one of the last major settlements before the trail starts getting very rugged.

  • Max Altitude:2080m/6824ft
  • Time:6-7 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 07:Trek from Yamphuding to Torongding

After Yamphuding, the trail becomes narrower and more isolated, heralding the entrance into the wilder route. The trek today contains steep rises and falls through dense forest, rocky sections, and ridgetop paths. We will cross over many suspension bridges spanning fast-moving rivers and deep forest corridors with moss-covered stones and waterfalls.

Towards Torongding, the landscape is more dramatic and secluded, dotted with only a few seasonal shelters and teahouses in the entire valley. Torongding is a quiet spot deep in the forest. It's perfect for resting before the altitude rises quite steeply.

  • Max Altitude:2340m/7677ft
  • Time:6-7 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 08:Trek from Torongding to Cheram

This is one of the more demanding days as the trail climbs considerably towards Cheram. The path ascends through thick rhododendron and hemlock forests before entering the alpine zone, where the trees thin out and the views open dramatically.

We will pass several viewpoints overlooking steep valleys and snowy ridges, a testament to just how remote and wild this region is. By the time we reach Cheram, the terrain feels totally different, open, cold, and surrounded by towering Himalayan walls. Cheram is a major rest point for trekkers heading towards Kanchenjunga South Base Camp, and the mountain views here are extremely rewarding.

  • Max Altitude:3868m/12,690ft
  • Time:6-7 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 09:Trek from Cheram to Ramche, then explore Kanchenjunga South Base Camp (4730m/15,518ft)

Today is the highlight of the entire trek as we finally make our way toward the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. The trail from Cheram to Ramche is a gentle walk with breathtaking views across glacial moraines, wide alpine meadows, and open landscapes carved by ancient ice flows.

Once we arrive in Ramche, we leave our bags behind and continue toward Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. It is a spectacular amphitheater of rock, ice, and soaring Himalayan peaks. The final climb rewards us with a close-up view of Kanchenjunga's massive south face, frozen waterfalls, and the glacier spilling down the valley. After we spend some time exploring and photographing the area, we get back to Ramche and spend the night there.

  • Max Altitude:4160m/13,648ft
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 10:Trek from Ramche to Torongding

After the grandeur of Kanchenjunga South Base Camp, we start descending along the same route towards Torongding. The walk offers new sights as the dramatic alpine landscapes slowly give way to forested valleys and warmer temperatures. It's a long and refreshing descent, and with thinner air at a lower altitude, we find the walking pace easier. Later in the afternoon, we reach the quiet forested settlement of Torongding, where we stay overnight in a warm teahouse.

  • Max Altitude:2995m/9826ft
  • Time:6-7 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Once at Ranipul, the private vehicle will be in place for a drive to Phidim, a lively hill town with comfortable lodges, good food, and a well-deserved hot shower. It is the perfect spot to relax after days of walking through some of the most remote villages in Nepal.

  • Max Altitude:1200m/3937ft

Know Before You Go

What is the Best Time to Trek to Kanchenjunga South Base Camp?

The best seasons for the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trekking include autumn from September to November and spring from March to May. During these months, the weather is usually stable, the skies are clear, and the mountain views are at their best. It's ideal for photography and high-altitude trekking.

Off-season trekking may be possible either in winter or during the monsoon, but snowfall, landslides, or poor availability of lodges will be a challenge. For trekkers planning the 2026/2027 expedition, autumn is normally preferred, with the best trail conditions, better visibility, and moderately warm temperatures.

Spring is the time for rhododendrons to bloom and lush landscapes to emerge, creating a visually stunning experience. If you are in confusion about when to book your trip, reach out to us, and our team will help you plan according to the weather patterns and also to your comfort.

What kind of accommodation is available on the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek?

Accommodation on the Short Kanchenjunga Trek is carefully selected to provide maximum comfort without compromising the remote adventure experience. Throughout the trek, you will stay in local lodges and teahouses that have private rooms with bedding, clean bathrooms, and cozy communal dining areas.

In some of the more remote high-altitude villages, facilities may be basic but are always clean, safe, and well-organized. The lodges are strategically positioned so that there is enough time to rest and acclimate properly, allowing you to enjoy sunset views, snow-capped mountains, and high-altitude valleys after a long day of trekking.

Most of the teahouses along the way offer charging facilities, wifi, and hot showers at an extra charge. At the higher altitude, however, the connection is limited, and so are the facilities.

What are the options for food and drinking water on the trek?

On the trek to Kanchenjunga South Base Camp, Himalayan Recreation makes sure the meals are nutritionally balanced and high-energy enough to deal with high elevation, and also hygienic. The menu on offer is a selection of Nepali cuisine, together with recognizable Continental food along the route.

Your breakfast will normally consist of oatmeal porridge, egg, bread, and tea/coffee. The meal for lunch and dinner will include rice, noodles, lentil soup (dal bhat), fresh vegetables, and protein such as egg or chicken, depending on availability. You can also get options of dumplings, fried rice, and noodle soup at some of the teahouses in lower altitudes.

While most of the lodges provide safe drinking water, carrying purification tablets or a personal filter bottle is recommended for added safety, especially in higher altitude areas where the sources may not be fully treated. Hydration is key to avoiding altitude-related issues, and your guides make sure that you have access to safe drinking water throughout the trek.

The transportation for this trek includes airport pickups, flights, private vehicles for road transfers, and jeeps where required. You first fly from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, from where a short drive leads you to Ilam. You will then have another day of driving to Taplejung, which is the beginning point of your trek.

Once you complete the trek, you will have a short drive to Phidim from your trekking ending point, Ranipul. A drive from Phidim to Bhadrapur and a flight from there brings you back to Kathmandu.

All the transportation from road to air on this 13 days itinerary is included in our package, so you do not have to worry about any of these logistics.

What is the difficulty level of the trek to Kanchenjunga South Base Camp?

The Kanchenjunga South Base Camp falls into the category of a moderate to challenging trek due to its remoteness, high altitude, and long trekking hours per day. You will be going through narrow trails, steep ascents and descents, river crossings, and high mountain passes throughout the trek.

Some days require 6-8 hours of walking, whereas acclimatization days allow for shorter walks and exploration. This is an ideal trek for people who have considerable physical fitness and are experienced trekkers, although beginners can also try to do this trek with proper planning and an expert guide.

Himalayan Recreation aims to balance adventure alongside safety and comfort during your trek for everyone to fully enjoy the journey without avoidable risks. So we designed our itinerary with safety in mind, and our guides are well-trained for remoteness and emergencies.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) or altitude sickness, usually develops when the body cannot adjust to high altitudes—ordinarily above 3,000 to 3,500 meters. Symptoms may involve headaches, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, and shortness of breath. On the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek, altitudes reach over 4500 meters, making acclimatization very necessary.

To avoid altitude sickness, make sure you drink plenty of water, walk slowly, and avoid alcohol. In case of emergencies, we are prepared for either descent or helicopter evacuation, so let your guide know immediately if you feel something is wrong.

How to Prepare for the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek?

Preparing for the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trekking involves physical fitness, mental preparation, and proper equipment. As the trek is challenging and remote, you should start physical training a few months prior. We recommend regular cardio exercises, hill walking, and climbing stairs to simulate trekking conditions.

Strength training is necessary for the legs, core, and back to help in carrying a daypack through long daily treks. It's also important to acquaint yourself with high-altitude trekking, as this route is really remote, with very limited facilities.

Preparing yourself mentally for long days, uncertain weather, and moderate isolation will ensure you enjoy the trek fully and safely. Himalayan Recreation also provides pre-trek briefings, equipment checks, and guidance on fitness routines so that you're fully prepared for your adventure.
