Itinerary

Day 01:Arrival in Kathmandu

Your adventure to the old Kingdom of Lo begins the moment you reach Kathmandu, Nepal's capital. Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, our friendly Himalayan Recreation team will receive you with a smile and transfer you to your city center hotel. Once settled, one can stroll along the bustling streets of Thamel, with trekking stores, handicraft shops, and small cafes lined along the alleyway.

Late afternoon, we gather for a short orientation session during which you will be briefed on the history of the Upper Mustang Valley, the Lo-Manthang Tiji Festival, and the exciting jeep ride ahead.

  • Max Altitude:1350M
  • Accommodation:3 Star Hotel

Day 02:Arrive in Pokhara and Prepare for the Road Trip

This morning, you will drive to Pokhara, the picturesque gateway to the Annapurnas, which awaits you. You have a show of Himalayan giants off your window: Machapuchare (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Dhaulagiri towering above the horizon. In 25 minutes, you land in Pokhara, where tranquil Phewa Lake reflects the white peaks above.

After checking in, you will have the afternoon free to take in Pokhara's lakeside beauty. You may take a boat ride across Phewa Lake, enjoy the World Peace Pagoda on top of a ridge, or simply sit at a café overlooking the water. Your guide will explain your itinerary for the jeep drive the next day at night so that you are ready for the bumpy but scenic drive ahead.

  • Max Altitude:820M
  • Time:6-7 hours
  • Accommodation:3 Star Hotel
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 03:Scenic Jeep Drive from Pokhara to Tatopani (1,190 m)

This is actually the start of your 12 days overland journey itinerary. After breakfast, we climb into our tough 4WD jeeps and begin driving north on the road carved into hillside ridges. The ride follows the Kali Gandaki River, one of the deepest in the world, between the colossal Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Each bend holds a new vista, villages tucked into hillslope terraces, waterfalls plunging off cliffs, and suspension bridges spanning foaming rivers.

By the afternoon, we reach Tatopani, a small town famous for its hot springs of natural origin. After hours of driving, there is nothing more refreshing than soaking in the hot, mineral-rich waters as the river tumbles against the shore. Locals are convinced that the springs have healing properties, soothing physical tiredness as much as spiritual fatigue. Spending a night here gives you a feel of mountain village life and allows your body to acclimatize to the road journey ahead.

  • Max Altitude:1,190 m
  • Time:5-6 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 04:Drive through Jomsom and Muktinath to Kagbeni (2,810 m)

This day brings us further into the Kali Gandaki Valley and onto the ancient trade route, which once linked Nepal and Tibet. The route to Jomsom is dusty, windy, and surprisingly different from lower Nepal's lush greenness. Jomsom, the district headquarters, has a mix of modern amenities and good Tibetan cultural influence. Prayer flags flutter in the wind, and apple orchards line the valley. This region is also famous for apple brandy production.

We take a short detour here to pay respects at the sacred Muktinath Temple, which is visited by Hindus and Buddhists as a pilgrimage site. Pilgrims can be seen bathing in the 108 cold water spouts and lighting butter lamps as an offering. We ride on naked cliffs and canyons carved out by the wind before arriving at Kagbeni, the officially accepted gateway to Upper Mustang. Kagbeni is walking history; its cobblestone streets, roofed houses, and monasteries speak of ancient caravans and monks who walked this path centuries ago

  • Max Altitude:2,810 m
  • Time:2-3 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 05:Drive to Charang (3,560 m) – Into the Kingdom of Lo

From Kagbeni, enchantment really begins. We officially enter Upper Mustang, a territory previously forbidden to foreigners and still oozing an aura. The landscape morphs into a movie-set desert plateau: cliffs, rock, and caves dug out high into the hills. The jeep track is bouncy, but each bump uncovers scenery more fantastical than the previous one.

We stop on our way to admire solitary villages and ancient stupas painted red, white, and the hues of ancient Buddhism. The tranquility of the region is profound, only broken by the shout of a herder or the prayer flag wind. We reach Charang (Tsarang), which is a village of ancient history, by afternoon. Its old monastery and fortress-type houses show Tibetan-influenced architectural designs, and the landscape that frames it is a peaceful backdrop. Tonight we prepare for the impending Lo-Manthang Tiji Festival as we approach closer to Mustang's walled capital.

  • Max Altitude:3,560 m
  • Time:4-5 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 06:Charang to Lo-Manthang drive (3,840 m) – Enter the Walled Kingdom

The day is one of the best on the tour, as we reach Lo-Manthang, the ancient walled capital of Upper Mustang, finally. The jeep ride from Charang is short but unforgettable. The road winds through high desert valleys by chortens and mani walls that stretch forever across the plateau. Along the way, we stop to see the massive cliffs punctuated with mysterious sky caves hand-carved by long-lost cultures.

As we approach Lo-Manthang, city walls loom up in front of us like a desert oasis. The gate leads into a medieval town frozen in time. Inside, winding streets turn between whitewashed mud-brick houses, and centuries-old monasteries loom tall in the heart of the village. After checking into our lodge, you’ll have time to wander around and feel the unique atmosphere of this lost kingdom. Tonight, anticipation builds; the Tiji Festival begins tomorrow, and the entire town is already buzzing with preparations.

  • Max Altitude:3,840 m
  • Time:5-6 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 07:First Day of the Tiji Festival in Lo-Manthang

We find ourselves today in the midst of the Tiji Festival, an eruption of color and sacred jubilation within the Himalayan vista. The entire town emerges to the town square of Lo-Manthang as monks of the Choede Monastery emerge in silk robes, faces hidden behind elaborately ornamented masks. The festival is initiated by a ceremony to pay homage to Dorje Jono, a deity said to have defeated demons and brought peace to the land.

The place is filled with the sound of long horns, drums, and chanting, a combination that is simultaneously otherworldly and deeply emotional. Villagers from across Mustang arrive in their finest traditional attire; women adorn turquoise jewelry, men don long wool robes, and children play and run in glee. For us, it is not only a spectacle but also a precious cultural experience, the chance to see traditions kept alive for centuries in this isolated Himalayan kingdom. In the night, we return to our lodge with the rhythms of the chants still echoing in our heads.

  • Max Altitude:3,840 m
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 08:Second Day of the Tiji Festival – Ritual Dances and Sacred Stories

The second day of the Tiji Festival is more participative, with the masked dances and ritual plays that reenact the battle between good and evil. Monks dance with their faces concealed behind masks, their movements stiff and formal, near-hypnotic, as they enact the victory of Dorje Jono over the agents of destruction that had once attacked the kingdom of Mustang. Each movement has meaning, and each drumbeat vibrates in the hearts of the spectators.

Beyond the spectacle, what’s most striking is the devotion of the local people. Families sit together in the square, offering prayers, spinning prayer wheels, and passing butter tea. Children watch wide-eyed, absorbing stories that have been told this way for generations. You’ll feel a profound sense of connection to a culture that lives in harmony with the rhythms of nature and spirituality. As the festival continues well into the night, we return to our lodge, grateful to be witnessing something so special and spiritual.

  • Max Altitude:3,840 m
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 09:Final Day of the Tiji Festival – Victory of Good over Evil

The final day of the Tiji Festival is the most dramatic and powerful. Today, the dances reach their climax as the monks ritually expel evil from the planet. The dance closes with the sacrifice of an effigy of suffering and negative energy, symbolizing renewal and harmony for the future year. The crowd claps, prayer flags flutter in the wind, and the atmosphere is one of hope, joy, and spiritual renewal.

After the closing ceremony, Lo-Manthang explodes into joy. Villagers congregate, families congratulate one another, and the square is converted into an arena of joy and camaraderie. For travelers, it is an elite few who can witness not just a festival but the throbbing hub of Mustang's heritage. The evening is yours to rediscover Lo-Manthang's streets again, embraced by the soft light of butter lamps from monasteries and the tranquil rhythm of life within the walled city.

  • Max Altitude:3,840 m
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 10:Uncovering Lo-Manthang – Monasteries, Caves, and Palaces

With the festival now behind us, today we are touring Lo-Manthang in-depth. We visit its age-old monasteries, which hold murals, scriptures, and statues testifying to Mustang's spirituality. The Jampa Lhakhang (God House), the Thubchen Monastery, and the Chodey Monastery are notable, their walls having been filled with beautiful Buddhist paintings which have survived the test of time.

In the afternoon, we can take a jeep ride or a short hike to nearby caves and villages. The caves are carved into high cliffs, dating back centuries, ago meditation retreats or tombs. We return to Lo-Manthang and visit the royal palace, where ancient traditions of the former king and queen of Mustang still exist. As the sun dipped low, we spent our last evening in this incredible walled city, appreciating the chance to have witnessed the Tiji Festival and walk the streets of what is unequivocally a timeless place.

  • Max Altitude:3,840 m
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 11:Drive Back from Lo-Manthang to Jomsom

Today, we bid farewell to the enchanting walled city of Lo-Manthang and begin the drive back. The jeep drive brings us back through Upper Mustang's windy valleys and desolate mountains. Coming back the way we came, you'll notice how the reverse is a different world, the cliffs blazing under the changing light, the snow-topped ridges far away contrasting with parched ridges.

We pass through small villages with locals going about their daily lives again since the festival has ended. The road takes us along many walls, ancient chortens, and the Kali Gandaki riverbed, reminders of the historic trade routes that connected Tibet with Nepal. We arrive at Jomsom, the entry point to Mustang, in the late afternoon.

  • Max Altitude:2700 M
  • Time:5-6 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 12:Flight from Jomsom to Pokhara and Drive/Fly to Kathmandu – Departure

On our final morning in Mustang, we fly scenic from Jomsom to Pokhara (weather permitting), providing us with one last bird's-eye view of the stunning mountains and valleys that we've just traversed. We then drive or take a short domestic flight back to Kathmandu, completing the final loop of this incredible experience.

In the capital, you can do some souvenir shopping at Thamel in the afternoon, have a last dinner, or simply relax after a lifetime journey. The Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Jeep Tour provides you with more than just photos; it provides you with stories, spiritual insights, and cultural immersion that few tourists have the opportunity to witness.

Although the region is accessible from March to November, the weather conditions are at their best during the spring and autumn seasons. If you want to opt out of the festival, then you can go for our regular Upper Mustang trek or jeep tour in spring or autumn for the best scenery.

The weather is clear during these months, the temperatures are moderate, and the landscape of Upper Mustang is optimal. You can also embark on a tour to this region in the monsoon, as there is little rain here because of its arid landscape.

What accommodation will I get during the 12 days Mustang Tiji Festival Tour?

Your Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Jeep Tour takes you through the tour with warm and traditional accommodation in the tea houses along the route. You will get the comforts of 3-star accommodations in Kathmandu and Pokhara. As you enter the Mustang region, the facilities get simpler.

You will be experiencing local hospitality at local tea houses and guesthouses. These places provide a warm and cultural environment that complements your overall tour experience.

The rooms come with a bed and blanket, with shared bathrooms, and most teahouses have communal dining areas. A hot shower is also available in most of the lodges at an extra cost. As for charging and Wi-Fi, you will have to pay an extra charge, but the connection is not reliable because of the remoteness of the region.

Apart from that, you can get Western cuisines like pizza, pasta, and noodles at the lower altitude, but as you ascend to higher altitudes, the options might get limited, but you can still get healthy, nutritious food.

The breakfast menu usually includes bread, Tibetan bread, soup, porridge, and vegetables. We further provide you with tea after every meal.

Travel in Upper Mustang includes high altitude, especially when you get to Lo Manthang, which is at 3,810 m. Although the Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Jeep Tour allows for gradual acclimatization, one should be sensitive to altitude sickness.

How to prepare for the Tiji Festival Jeep Tour?

Preparation for the Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Jeep Tour is not so much physical, as it is not a trekking trip. Since the tour entails driving into a high-altitude restricted region, the most important preparation is travel bookings, health measures, and packing well.

Make sure you have photocopies of your travel documents, and book ahead of time since festival season is high season. The air is thinner with elevation, so make sure to acclimatise by staying hydrated and carrying any prescribed medication you might have for altitude sickness.

As the Tiji Festival attracts a lot of tourists and locals, prepare for crowds, long ceremonies, and noisy but colorful days.
