Annapurna North Base Camp Trek Overview

Our Annapurna North Base Camp Trek is truly a distinctive and fulfilling adventure that takes you deep into the unexplored northern face of the iconic Annapurna range.

Unlike the popular South Annapurna Base Camp Trek, the North Annapurna Base Camp Trek leads you through the hidden ancient village, unexplored Himalayan landscape, and serene trail all to yourself.

Nestled in the heart of the Annapurna Conservation Area, the North ABC Trek holds immense historical significance—it was the original base camp used during the 1950 expedition to climb Annapurna I, the first 8,000-meter peak to be scaled.

This 12 days trek to Annapurna North Base Camp package is designed for those of you seeking raw adventure and authentic local experiences. As this trail remained hidden for decades, the North Annapurna Base Camp is an exclusive Himalayan gem, taking you to the base of Annapurna’s mighty north face.

What makes this Annapurna North Base Camp package so unique is the combination of isolation, scenery, and cultural attractions. From peaceful Gurung villages to secluded glacial valleys to the magical lake, every day of the 12 days Annapurna North Base Camp Trek itinerary is an authentic discovery.

You can even combine this journey with other gems of the region, like the Khopra Danda Trek or the scenic Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, for more diverse exploration.

Our 12 days itinerary of the trek to Annapurna North Base Camp is easier compared to other developed long trails of the region; however, you should be prepared to experience the least in terms of accommodation and facilities, as this North Annapurna Base Camp Trek route is only recently being developed.

If you are physically fit and can walk 5–7 hours a day on mixed terrain, this trip is well-suited for you. The highest altitude you reach during the journey is 4200 m, and with our well-paced itinerary and professional guide, you are in safe hands.

Book your adventure to this unexplored side of Mount Annapurna for your 2026/2027 adventure at the best cost with Himalayan Recreation, and have the best time of your life.

On reaching Pokhara, you check in at the hotel and unwind for the night. You have the option of going for a serene boat ride on Phewa Lake, taking a stroll along the lakeside road, or just relaxing.

Day 03:Drive from Pokhara to Tatopani and trek to Upper Narchyang (2,140m)

On the third of the 12 days itinerary, we start the day with a scenic drive from Pokhara to Tatopani, which is a serene village marking the start of your trek. We trek from Tatopani through lush forests, rice terraces, and rural villages. You get to witness snow peaks for the first time, and the trail introduces you to rural life in Magar and Gurung communities.

The day's hike brings you to Upper Narchyang, a charming village renowned for its richness in culture and stunning mountain vistas. The first day of trekking provides a perfect balance of scenery, culture, and easy acclimatization, a preview of the tough climbs ahead in the North ABC Trek.

Day 04:Trek Upper Narchyang (2,140m) to Chhotepa (2,369m)

Today's trek gradually ascends through oak and rhododendron forests, going through terraced land and grazing fields where sheep and yaks roam wild. From here on, you experience the remoteness and unspoiled surroundings on the North Annapurna Base Camp Trek as you head to Chhotepa.

After around 5-6 hours of walking, you arrive in Chhotep, which is a peaceful and secluded location, perfect for an overnight stay before heading to higher elevations. Day 05:Trek from Chhotepa (2,369m) to Sandhi Kharka (3,165m)

Today's itinerary involves a tougher and longer trek as we constantly go uphill to Sandhi Kharka. The trek goes through alpine meadows, glacial streams, and rocky trails, unveiling increasingly higher peaks like Annapurna I and Nilgiri. On this day, the view shifts, giving you the feeling of being in some secluded corner of the Himalayas. On the way, there is a waterfall where you can unwind and relax before you continue your uphill walk.

Sandhi Kharka is a beautiful green meadow with sharp ridges and alpine jungle around it. The ambiance is an ideal place to relax, unwind, and prepare for the challenging climb the next day to Annapurna North Base Camp.

Upon arrival, you will have time to explore the surrounding area, photograph, and soak up the dramatic views. The sense of achievement and the sheer view make this day unforgettable. You will stay overnight at the base camp level, where you can unwind and reflect on the journey so far, surrounded in full by the serenity and grandeur of the high Himalayas.

Day 07:Trek from Annapurna North Base Camp (4,190m) to Sandhi Kharka (3,165m)

The downward route gives a contrasting view of peaks and valleys so that you see the dramatic landscape in another light.

Along the way, you have time for peaceful moments of reflection, viewing alpine flora and fauna, and soaking up the peace that is one of the best things about the northern Annapurna area. Staying overnight at Sandhi Kharka is another chance to unwind in the peaceful meadows and acclimatize for the remainder of the trek into even more remote highland areas.

Day 08:Trek from Sandhi Kharka (3,165m) to Thulo Bugin (3,500m)

The trail crosses open alpine ridges, high country pastures, and unobstructed views of surrounding peaks. This part of the trip provides you with the true feeling of isolation and pristine beauty of the region, distant from typical tourist routes.

Thulo Bugin is a serene overnight stop with minimal amenities, and the serene environment with magnificent views offers you a unique experience. The sense of being off the beaten track adds to the adventure and makes this trek to Annapurna North Base Camp more special.

The route changes from alpine ridges, through temperate forest, and flat farmland as you head toward Lete. There are more amenities here than in the remote highlands, including a comfortable resting place and room to recuperate after a couple of days' trekking in demanding conditions.

The trek down provides an opportunity for reflection on your journey, interaction with village people, and appreciation of the diversity of the Annapurna. Lete's peaceful atmosphere offers the perfect opportunity to relax, take in the view of the village, and ready yourselves for the drive to Pokhara tomorrow.

In Pokhara, you can relax along Phewa Lake, go boating, or walk along the lakeshore. Some visitors also indulge in a relaxing massage or try local cuisine to relax tired muscles. This day is ideal for celebrating the success of your trek, recalling the pristine landscape, villages, and Himalayan scenery that you have experienced over the past couple of days.

                      Day 11:Pokhara (822m) to Kathmandu (1,400m) drive

After breakfast, today we return to Kathmandu by the same route of rural landscape, hillside terracing, and characteristic villages. Accommodation on the North ABC Trek is mostly in simple teahouses and homestays, which offer cozy but straightforward accommodation. As the trail of the North Annapurna Base Camp trek is only now being developed, do not expect many amenities.

The higher up you ascend, the simpler the facilities become, and you will be sleeping in mountain tents with blankets and mats. The shared bathrooms usually have squat toilets, and there are hot showers only in the lower villages for an extra charge.

Power for charging gadgets is normally available in the lower villages at a minimal fee, but it is not available as you go higher up in the mountains. Wi-Fi is available in some villages at the start of the trek. As for Kathmandu and Pokhara, you will be staying in a 3-star hotel with all the needed amenities.

What kind of food is available during the Annapurna North Base Camp Trek?

While food options get limited the higher you ascend, each meal is hearty, warm, and comforting and keeps you going for long days of hiking.

Can I get safe drinking water on the North ABC trek route?

Yes, drinking water is readily available along the trail of the Annapurna North Base Camp trek in the form of teahouse taps, natural springs, or by purchasing bottled or boiled water.

To save money and at the same time reduce waste, it is highly recommended to carry a refillable bottle and water purification tablets or a portable filter. Boiled water is largely available from most teahouses for a small fee, ensuring you remain hydrated during your hike. Avoid drinking directly from the streams along the route, as it is not entirely safe.

How difficult is the North Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

Our Annapurna North Base Camp Trek is of moderate difficulty, most appropriate for fit hikers who have had previous trekking experience. The 12 days itinerary follows a remote and off-the-beaten northern route with 5–7 hours of daily walking on mixed terrain consisting of rocky paths, alpine ridges, and steep ascents.

The trek reaches a maximum altitude of about 4,200 meters and requires proper acclimatization to minimize the risk of altitude sickness.

Technical mountaineering skills are unnecessary, but the remote area, minimum facilities, and rugged trails raise the difficulty level of the trek over the busy southern ABC trail.

What is Altitude Sickness, and how can you prevent it?

Altitude sickness is a condition that occurs when you trek at altitudes above 3,000 meters. For the North Annapurna Base Camp Trek, you will be trekking above 4,000 meters, which poses the possibility of having altitude sickness.

Thus, being aware of its symptoms and acclimatization is a must. Headache, nausea, dizziness, and weakness are some of the most frequent symptoms that you should be aware of during the trek.

To prevent altitude sickness, make sure to walk at your own pace, drink plenty of water, skip alcohol or cigarettes, and inform your guide immediately if you experience any symptoms. Our package is designed to help you acclimatize gradually and safely with a well-paced itinerary. So, the chances of getting altitude sickness are low.

How to Prepare for Annapurna North Base Camp Trek?

It is essential to prepare both physically and mentally to fully appreciate the Annapurna North Base Camp Trek. You can begin by increasing your endurance level through hiking, jogging, or cycling a few weeks before the trek.

Strength training in your lower limbs, core, and back will also make the carrying of a daypack less burdensome and help avoid fatigue on inclining paths. If you can, we recommend you go on short hikes and walks before the trek with a backpack to get used to it.

Apart from the physical preparation, familiarize yourself with the itinerary, prepare for altitude gains, and pack as light as possible, keeping only the essentials. Himalayan Recreation provides a pre-trek orientation to familiarize you with all preparation requirements in order to provide a safe, comfortable, and memorable trek.
