We have brought you the best of the Annapurna region with our Poon Hill and Mardi Himal Trek package, combining two of the best trekking routes. This exclusive 12 days itinerary circles you around the legendary Mardi Himal trek via Poon Hill in a single journey.

If you wish for a shorter and easier trip, then you can also choose to do the Poonhill Trek and the Mardi Himal Trek separately.

Suited for both beginner and experienced trekkers, the Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek route combines cultural richness with panoramic views. The route doesn’t require prior high-altitude experience or an extreme level of fitness, but it offers all the thrills of a high Himalayan trek.

If you are a solo traveler, couple, or small group seeking adventure, tranquility, and local hospitality on a single route, then our 12 days Poon Hill and Mardi Himal Trek is the way to go.

However, keeping in mind that the trek goes up to 4000 m in terms of altitude, we do not recommend it to physically unwell and pregnant individuals.

Our Mardi Himal Trek via Poon Hill journey begins as you head to the peaceful lake town of Pokhara, which is the entrance to Annapurna. From there on, the trek takes you through dense woods, small villages, and high ridges.

You first head to the mythical Poon Hill, where you experience one of the most magical sunrises over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. This part of the trail treats you to the warm hospitality of local Gurung people and magnificent forest trails.

The second phase of the Poon Hill and Mardi Himal Trek begins as you transition from Poon Hill to Mardi Himal. The landscape becomes more alpine and rugged, and you gradually ascend through Low Camp and High Camp, eventually reaching Mardi Himal Base Camp.

The highest point of the Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek is Mardi Base Camp, situated at an altitude of 4500 m, which offers you close-up views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Peak), Mardi Himal, and Annapurna South.

Our 12 days Mardi Himal Trek via Poon Hill package is designed to offer you the best value for the cost you pay. Throughout the route, you will be staying in simple and clean teahouses, and our expert guide will be there guiding you on every corner of the trail.

Whether you are trekking solo, with a group, or with family, we have all the options ready for you. Book your Ghorepani Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek with Himalayan Recreation now for 2026/2027.

The ride itself is a visual treat, rolling hills, paddy fields, and distant snow peaks as an appetizer to the days ahead.

Upon arrival in Pokhara, the contrast with Kathmandu is striking. The air feels lighter, and the stunning backdrop of the Annapurna range instantly captures your attention. After you have checked into your lakeside hotel, you will be able to stroll about the vibrant Phewa Lake. You can enjoy a quiet boat ride or sit having coffee and watch the Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain) mirrored on the lake surface.

Day 03:Drive to Birethanti and trek to Ulleri

Today, after breakfast, we embark on a 1.5-hour drive from Pokhara to Birethanti, the village where our Mardi Himal Trek through Poon Hill officially begins. We'll complete our permits at the Annapurna Conservation Area checkpoint and be ready to depart. The first few kilometers follow a gradually rising path, traveling along suspension bridges that go through stunning villages of houses built of stone.

As we rise, the scenery changes, and we begin climbing up the famous stone steps to Ulleri. We’ll pass through lush subtropical forests and catch the first glimpses of snowy peaks peeking through the treetops. Ulleri is a picturesque Magar village known for its terraced fields and welcoming locals. It’s the ideal place to rest after the day’s steady climb. In the evening, we’ll enjoy a hearty Nepali meal in a traditional teahouse and settle in for our first night in the mountains.

  • Max Altitude:1960m
  • Time:6-7 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 04:Ulleri to Ghorepani hike

We hike higher today on one of the most breathtaking sections of the Poon Hill and Mardi Himal Trek. While walking out of Ulleri, the route leads us through enchanted rhododendron and oak forests. The path is peaceful, shaded, and well-suited for slow walking, providing us with sufficient time to enjoy nature and inhale mountain air.

By early afternoon, we reach the vibrant village of Ghorepani, situated on a ridge above the huge peaks of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna South. One of the most stunning and culturally rich villages on the entire trek, Ghorepani is a treat in itself with its brightly colored houses, wind-swept prayer flags, and welcoming smiles of the local Gurung and Magar inhabitants.

  • Max Altitude:2880m
  • Time:5-6 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 05:Sunrise Hike to Poon Hill (3210m) and Trek to Tadapani

We start very early today. At pre-dawn hour, we set off on the short but arduous ascent to Poon Hill, the well-named viewpoint after which this trek is named. Reaching the top just as the first light of dawn illuminates the summits, we have a one-time sight: the sun rising over the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna massifs, bathing them in golden, orange, and pink light. The 360-degree panoramas of the Himalayas are breathtaking, with giants like Dhaulagiri (8167m), Annapurna I (8091m), and Machhapuchhre (6997m).

After you've absorbed the scenery and snapped countless photos, we descend to Ghorepani for breakfast and continue our trek to Tadapani. The trail winds through thick forests of plenty of wildlife and colourful vegetation. It is a peaceful, gentle descent, with occasional climbs. In the afternoon, we are in Tadapani, a small hill village perfect for relaxing after a rewarding day of adventure, beauty, and soul-stirring landscapes.

  • Max Altitude:2630m
  • Time:6-7 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 06:Trek from Tadapani to Landruk via Ghandruk (1940m)

We start the 6th day of our itinerary by trekking downhill through enchanting mossy forests of oak, rhododendron, and ferns. The trail is peaceful and in the shade, with occasional clearings that give views of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli in the distance. Going down, we come to the renowned Gurung village of Ghandruk, one of the largest and most culturally fascinating villages in the Annapurna range. Ghandruk is a living museum of tradition, with slate-roofed stone houses, narrow lanes, and a local museum that offers deep insight into the life of the Gurung people.

From Ghandruk, we hike to Landruk, a scenic village on the opposite side of the Modi Khola river. The path descends, then meanders up through terraced rice fields and woodland. Landruk is quieter than Ghandruk but just as lovely, with sweeping views of Annapurna South and the crests of the onward Mardi Himal route. Here we leave the regular Annapurna Base Camp trail and take the route towards Mardi Himal.

  • Max Altitude:1565m
  • Time:5-6 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 07:Trek from Landruk to Low Camp

Today marks the official beginning of the Mardi Himal Trek via Poon Hill section, and the landscape begins to alter in quite a dramatic way. We depart Landruk and ascend steeply upwards via thick forests of rhododendron, maple, and hemlock trees. This part of the trail is peaceful, far removed from the more popular Ghorepani trails. The air becomes crisp as we climb higher, and the vista begins to open up to reveal views of Machhapuchhre through the forest.

We arrive at Forest Camp around noon and have lunch, after which the path continues its upward climb to Low Camp. The forest gradually thins, and the terrain begins to give way to more alpine scrub and open slopes. As we arrive at Low Camp, we're rewarded with the whole face of Machhapuchhre, much closer. You'll spend the night in a cozy tea house, enjoying hot soup and stunning views from your window.

  • Max Altitude:3050m
  • Time:5-6 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 08:Trek from Low Camp to High Camp

We say goodbye to the tree line this morning and trek up into the high alpine zone. The trail climbs a steep ridgeline with uninterrupted views on both sides, terraced valleys to the south, and looming snow-capped giants to the north. As we walk, the dramatic ridges and cliffs of the Annapurna range unveil themselves in all their splendor. This is one of the most scenic days of the entire Poon Hill and Mardi Himal Trek, where each step along the route opens up new views of Machhapuchhre peak.

We move at a slow pace today as we ascend to the higher altitude. There is a surreal quality to walking this trail, with the clouds below you, the snow-lined ridges ahead of you. We arrive at High Camp, a cluster of lodges perched on the ridge at 3600 meters, by early afternoon. From here, you’ll witness one of the most spectacular sunsets in the Himalayas, where the last rays of the sun light up the peaks in soft gold and purple hues.

  • Max Altitude:3600m
  • Time:5-6 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 09:Trek to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4500m) and descend to Badal Danda

Today again, we begin our journey early as we make our final ascent to Mardi Himal Base Camp, the pinnacle of this Ghorepani Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek. The trail follows a single-track path along the ridge line, with nothing but mountains, sky, and silence. The farther we climb, the smaller the world gets in the shadow of giants. And when we finally reach the base camp at 4500 meters, the reward is beyond description: a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the Annapurna range, with Mardi Himal, Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli all seemingly within reach.

We sit here soaking in the magnificence of the landscape, snapping photographs, and reflecting on the journey that has brought us here. The bare, natural beauty of Mardi Himal Base Camp will stay with you forever. After celebrating at this high spot, we begin descending to Badal Danda, a viewpoint literally "above the clouds." During the descent, the peaks are still visible while the green slopes roll back into view.

  • Max Altitude:3250m
  • Time:6-7 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 10:Trek to Siding (1700m) and Drive to Pokhara

Today, we say farewell to the alpine ridges and descend to warmer, greener forests. The walk from Badal Danda to Siding is a completely different experience, filled with orchids, waterfalls, mossy trees, and quiet trails that give you the feeling of walking on virgin territory. It's a gentle and easy downhill walk.

We arrive at Siding by lunchtime, enjoying a final lunch in the highlands before a scenic jeep ride takes us back to Pokhara. As we descend from the highlands into the comfort of the lakeside city, it feels surreal and gratifying. You have the afternoon free to unwind, indulge in a fine dinner, and perhaps even get a much-needed massage.

  • Max Altitude:822m
  • Time:6-7 hours
  • Accommodation:3 Star Hotel
  • Meals:Breakfast & Lunch

Day 11:Pokhara to Kathmandu by drive

After a relaxed breakfast at your lakeside hotel in Pokhara, we depart on the scenic drive to Kathmandu. We follow the meandering Prithvi Highway along the path of the Marsyangdi and Trishuli rivers with breathtaking views of green valleys, hillsides under terracing, and glimpses here and there of hillside villages between ridges.

You arrive in Kathmandu late in the afternoon, and you can spend the evening relaxing or exploring after checking into your hotel. A rooftop café in Thamel, trekking gear or souvenir shopping, or simply walking past flying prayer flags and temples, Kathmandu makes the perfect punctuation mark at the end of your journey.

  • Max Altitude:1350m
  • Time:6-8 hours
  • Accommodation:3 Star Hotel
  • Meals:Breakfast & Dinner
  • Transport:Tourist bus

Know Before You Go

Best Time for the Ghorepani Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek

You must choose the right time for the Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek to make your trip more memorable and comfortable. The best seasons to embark on this 12 days journey are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).

These seasons offer you clear skies, excellent views, and rhododendron forests in bloom. If you want to witness the view without any disruption, then spring and autumn are the best times. However, these are also the peak trekking season, so keep in mind that the trails can be packed.

You can also choose to trek in winter, but winter brings the risk of high snowfall, blocked roads, and closed lodges. Similarly, trekking in the monsoon is also not recommended because of the rainfall, landslides, and blocked roads.

Where will you be staying during the Mardi Himal Trek via Poon Hill?

Your 12 Days Poon Hill and Mardi Himal Trek lodging is carefully arranged by us to provide comfort and authenticity. We start and finish your journey with a night's comfort in a 3-star hotel in Pokhara, with hot showers, private rooms, and easy proximity to lakeside restaurants and shops.

On the trail, you’ll stay in locally-owned teahouses. Rooms are usually twin-sharing, equipped with a simple bed, pillow, and warm blanket. Attached bathrooms are available at lower elevations, while shared bathrooms are more common higher up.

You’ll gather for meals in a cozy communal dining area, where a heated stove often becomes the heart of the lodge. While Wi-Fi and charging options are available in many villages, connectivity fades at higher points like High Camp, offering the perfect excuse to unplug and soak in the view.

We organize everything for your accommodation in advance, so you can simply relax and have fun on the trek.

Food and Drinking Water during Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek

You will be having food in the teahouses along the route of the Mardi Himal and Poon Hill Trek. You can enjoy both local and international cuisines depending on the altitude you are in.

In Pokhara and at a lower altitude of the journey, there is a wide range of options to choose from. However, as you gain altitude, the options get limited, and Dal Bhat is usually the staple meal for lunch and dinner. Along with that, you can get noodles, soup, and pasta.

As for drinking water, you can easily refill water in the teahouses and along the streams. However, we recommend that you have only purified water or boiled water. You can bring water purification tablets or a filtered water bottle for safety.

Difficulty Level of Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek

The Mardi Himal Trek via Poon Hill is a moderate-grade trek that can be completed by anyone with good physical fitness. Perfect for beginners and experts, likely, this journey involves 5-6 hours of walking daily on average and goes up to 4500 m.

While no technical climbing is involved, good physical fitness and good health are a must as the trek involves gradual ups, steep downs, and some high-altitude walking. We recommend you try some short hikes and focus on leg workouts before the trek to make sure you are physically fit.

If you want to challenge yourself even further, you can combine other treks like Annapurna Base Camp into the itinerary or even go for the classic Annapurna Circuit Trek.

All You Need to Know About Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness is a condition that every trekker should be aware of before venturing on the Mardi Himal Trek via Poon Hill journey. As the itinerary ascends to 4500m, there is a possibility of getting altitude sickness.

However, the gradual ascent and acclimatization days on our itinerary will give your body time to acclimatize, decreasing the chance of getting altitude sickness. You need to be aware of the symptoms of the sickness, which include nausea, vomiting, headache, etc.

Drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol, and gradual ascent can prevent altitude sickness. Make sure to inform your guide as soon as you experience any symptoms.

Transportation for the Mardi Himal and Poonhill Trek

Getting to the starting point of Poon Hill and the Mardi Himal Trek is easy and picturesque. To begin the journey, you first have to reach the starting point, Pokhara. Our itinerary includes a bus ride from Kathmandu to Pokhara that takes around 6-7 hours.

If you do not wish to travel in a bus or want to save time, then there are other options like a private jeep or even a flight. But keep in mind that the cost rises with these customizations. The flight from KTM to Pokhara takes only 25 minutes and costs you around USD 150 extra.

From Pokhara, your journey continues with a short and scenic drive to Birethanti. From Birethanti, you will begin your walking journey. As the trek concludes, you will have a jeep ride back to Pokhara from Siding and the following day, a ride back to Kathmandu.

Himalayan Recreation arranges all transfers, airport transfers, city-to-city travel, and off-road jeep treks to/from trailheads are all included in your package.

How to Prepare for the Poonhill Mardi Himal Trek

Preparation is key while hiking to Poon Hill and Mardi Himal, as the trek exposes you to diverse terrain and altitudes. You can start by gradually building your endurance with regular cardio, hiking, and stair climbing at least a month before your trip to improve endurance.

Further, condition your mind for days of long trekking and weather that is uncertain. Acclimatization is built into the schedule with a slow pace, making sure you get plenty of time adjusting to the altitude change, but hydration, nutrition, and rest are crucial.
