Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek Trip Overview

Our Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of the most iconic treks that combines two of the legendary trails in Nepal. Bringing together the remote Manaslu Circuit Trek and the world-renowned Annapurna Circuit Trek, we have crafted an adventure that beats every other trip out there.

If you are seeking a journey that challenges you while also offering you the real adventure, cultural discovery, and raw beauty of the Himalayas, this is the ideal package for you.

The 23 days itinerary of the Manaslu Circuit trek with Annapurna begins in the remote and less-visited Manaslu region, where we gradually ascend through forests, secluded Buddhist villages, and breathtaking gorges before passing the Larkya La Pass (5,160 m).

From there, the trek joins up with the Annapurna Circuit, one of Nepal's most popular trekking routes, where we continue our journey further into the Manang Valley and cross the legendary Thorong La Pass (5,416 m), an altitude victory every trekker dreams of.

What makes the Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek package unique is that it offers both the solitude of an off-the-beaten path and the vibrancy of the Annapurna trail. You’ll experience a remarkable mix of landscapes: from subtropical forests and alpine meadows to arid Tibetan plateaus and snow-capped mountain passes.

Along the way, we stay at remote hill villages, interact with locals of the region, and witness centuries-old traditions that have not felt the touch of modern times. The trekking to the Manaslu Annapurna Circuit concludes at Jomsom, from where a scenic flight brings us back to Pokhara and then to Kathmandu.

As the length of the trip is over three weeks, you need to be experienced to some extent, but that does not mean we do not encourage dedicated beginners who are willing to push themselves.

We have crafted this 23 days trip with cost-effectiveness, acclimatization, and safety in mind for all trekkers. With our professional guides, flexibility in scheduling, and meticulous planning, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience you'll be discussing for years to come.

Welcome to Nepal, the kingdom of the Himalayas! Our representative will meet you at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu upon your arrival. Following a short transfer to the hotel, you can take some rest and relax. Afterwards, you can go explore the tourist hub Thamel, filled with trekking shops, cozy cafes, and waving prayer flags above, which set the tone for the adventure.

This is also the day you will be meeting your guides for the trek. They will provide you with a short briefing of the journey and you can ask any confusions you have to them during the briefing session.

Today officially commences your Himalayan journey. We travel early in the morning from Kathmandu and drive for several hours to Machha Khola, the gateway to the Manaslu valley. The drive lasts about 8–9 hours, going through hills, rice paddies, and river villages.

As the journey goes on, the road becomes more and more bumpy, foreshadowing the wild experience ahead. In the evening, we reach Machha Khola, a small village nestled on the banks of the Budhi Gandaki River.

Our Manaslu Circuit trek with Annapurna begins today as we begin walking from Machha Khola to Jagat, which leads us deep within the Budhi Gandaki Valley. We trek through subtropical forest, cross suspension bridges, and pass through tiny Gurung villages.

One of the day's highlights is Tatopani, where hot springs bubble out naturally along the trail. If time allows, we can soak our feet and take a quick dip before continuing. After another couple of ups and downs, we reach Jagat, a traditional village with stone-paved streets and old houses. This is the official checkpoint entry of the Manaslu Conservation Area, and so from here on, we are really in the wilderness.

Today's trek from Jagat to Deng offers us a wonderful mix of scenery and challenges. We trek over terraced fields, cascading waterfalls, and dense stands of bamboo as the trail rises gradually. Tiny villages along the way present us with glimpses of life in the remote Himalayas.

Passing over several suspension bridges, we at last reach Deng, a rural village on top of the river. Here we begin to notice Tibetan Buddhist influences in the form of fluttering prayer flags and mani walls along the trails. Deng is serene and quiet, with towering peaks surrounding it, making it a perfect resting spot after our 6–7 hour walk.

On the 5th day of our 23 days itinerary, we ascend higher as we trek towards Namrung. The landscape begins to change considerably; the subtropical cover gives way to an alpine landscape, and the climate is cooler and crisper. Along the way, we pass through Ghap, a beautiful village with prayer wheels and mani walls, reflective of the rich Buddhist cultural heritage of the region.

As the path ascends in a gradual way, mountain landscapes start unfolding before us. When we reach Namrung, we are greeted with magnificent views of Ganesh Himal, Siringi Himal, and other snow-capped peaks. Namrung village is itself a traditional settlement where stone houses and cultural prosperity give the impression that we are walking in the midst of the Himalayas, whose heartbeat lies all around us.

Though today's walk is shorter in miles, this one is also full of natural and cultural wonders. The trek from Namrung takes us through forest covered with oak and rhododendron, gradually gaining elevation as we walk towards Lho. The scenery becomes more and more incredible with every pace, as towering peaks lift ever closer.

Arrival at Lho is magical. The village is dominated by the towering Ribung Monastery, one of the religious highlights of the Manaslu trek. The views of Mount Manaslu looking up from the monastery are breathtaking. As you arrive in Lho, you can get a sight of the sun sinking behind the snow-covered peaks with golden light.

We trek today to Samagaon, the largest village of the Manaslu valley. The trail is just breathtaking with Manaslu and other ranges as background. The trails are lined with mani walls, chortens, and prayer flags, a testament to the region's strong Tibetan influence.

Samagaon village itself is a cultural and scenic gem. The village lies close to the famous Pungyen Monastery, which lies on a ridge overlooking stunning mountain scenery. To arrive here is to turn the clock back; the wooden houses, traditional clothing, and yak grazing all add up to that genuine Himalayan experience. At dusk, we soak in the breathtaking beauty and serenity of this high-altitude village.

This is the eighth day of our 23 days journey, and today we depart Samagaon and head towards Samdo, the final village before the high pass. The trail gently rises by yak grazing lands and hard ground, with mountains forming an inspiring amphitheater around us. Manaslu scenery is ever-present and inspiring as we make our way to the Tibetan border.

Samdo is a small but beautiful village on a high plateau. Its stone-built houses and vast open areas look rugged and virgin. Life here moves at a slow pace, being centered around yaks, farming, and strong tradition. We arrive in Samdo after 4–5 hours of trekking, giving us time to move around the village and absorb the peaceful atmosphere.

This is our first major acclimatization day on the Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek itinerary. Rest is necessary at this time to prepare our bodies for what lies ahead. Acclimatization is not a synonym for idleness, though; it's all about gentle activity.

We take a short hike up the surrounding hills for aerial views or trek to the Tibetan frontier to see breathtaking views sweeping across the border. The hikes not only acclimatize us to the thin air but also reward us with unrivaled mountain vistas. At Samdo, we take a day to familiarize ourselves with the village, hike to the small monastery, and observe the locals' traditional way of living.

The scenery today is more rugged but stunningly beautiful as we climb to Dharamshala, as it is called, Larkya Phedi. The day is shorter in terms of distance, but altitude lends an extra weight to every step. As the altitude increases, we have to make sure to walk at a slower pace while hydrating ourselves.

Dharamshala is a tiny village of stone houses, the terminal point before traversing over the Larkya La Pass. Here, the air is crisp and cold, with giant mountains rising all around. The overnight camp for today is very basic but provides you with all the necessary facilities. Upon arrival in Dharmashala, you can explore the surrounding area and mingle with other fellow trekkers.

This is the most exciting and challenging day of our Manaslu Circuit trek with Annapurna. We start early in the morning and set out towards the Larkya La Pass. The path is icy and steep, making its way over glacial moraines. Gradually and consistently, we make our way to the prayer-flag-draped peak of the pass at 5,106 meters. It takes us around 4-5 hours to reach the top, which also depends on the weather of the day.

Standing on top is a breathtaking sight; the Kang Guru, Cheo Himal, Himlung Himal, and Annapurna II appear stunning in the scenery. Following our triumph, we begin the long return to Bimthang. The contrast is staggering as we leave behind the harsh high-altitude terrain and walk into fertile meadows and glacial valleys. The path toward Bhimthang is a straight decline, which can be challenging on your legs. Exhausted but exhilarated, we rest at the stunning village of Bimthang tonight.

Today's trek following the triumph of yesterday is a happy respite. We trek on a trail that winds its way through rhododendron groves, pine woods, and glacial streams. The terrain becomes gentler as we move back to lower altitudes, passing through small villages such as Gowa and Tilije.

By late afternoon, we arrive in Dharapani, an important junction where the Manaslu Circuit intersects the Annapurna Circuit trekking trail. This village, situated along the Marsyangdi River, shows influences from both directions. It's the perfect place to glance back at the Manaslu section we just walked and prepare for the fabled Annapurna trail ahead of us. Overnight in Dharapani.

From Dharapani, today our trek officially starts on the Annapurna Circuit side. The trail goes through alpine meadows and forests of pine-oak-fir. We walk through traditional villages like Bagarchhap and Danakyu, where stone villages and Buddhist shrines line the roads.

The scenery is increasingly more dramatic as we approach Chame. Apple orchards and wide valleys give way to tremendous cliffs and rivers in full spate. Lamjung Himal and Annapurna II peaks reveal themselves on the horizon, guiding us further. We reach Chame, Manang District headquarters, after a steady 5–6 hour trek. The village offers panoramic views and a lively mix of culture and commerce.

This is already the fourteenth day of our itinerary, and it is one of the beautiful parts of the journey as we trek from Chame to Upper Pisang. We will be walking on suspension bridges, steadily ascending, and through pine forests as the peaks come increasingly close. We enjoy fresh air, gaze at the open sky, and absorb the scenery all along the way.

After a walk of around 5-6 hours, we arrive in Upper Pisang, which has stunning views of Annapurna II, Pisang Peak, Chulu Peak, and Tilicho Peak. The narrow road and quaint houses make Upper Pisang a charming village to spend the night. In the evening, you can enjoy the sunset view with the sun bathing the mountains in golden hues.

Leaving Upper Pisang today, we undertake one of the most beautiful parts of the Annapurna Circuit. Today's trek takes us through Manang's famous valley and around giants with snow-covered roofs. The trail offers two options: a lower, easier route and a higher, more scenic one over Ghyaru and Ngawal. The upper trail presents us with dramatic vistas of Annapurna II, III, IV, and Tilicho Peak, and sweeping glacial valleys carved by centuries of glacial action.

As we arrive at Manang, the scenery becomes arid, almost like a type of Himalayan desert. We pass through Tibetan-style villages, ancient monasteries, and chortens, attesting to the area's rich Buddhist culture. Finally, we arrive in Manang, one of the largest settlements on the Annapurna Circuit trek. Its vibrant market and stunning landscape of mountains make it a fascinating place to stay overnight.

This is our second acclimatization day, and we spend the day relaxing to acclimatize to a higher altitude. Manang is perfect for it, with its combination of nature and cultural exploration. Instead of lounging around, we step out on short acclimatization strolls. One option is the walk up to Gangapurna Lake, with blue water at the base of majestic glaciers. Another is a stroll up to a high point, where Annapurna and Gangapurna loom majestically above us.

During the day, we also have the chance to explore the village itself. Manang's monasteries provide us with a glimpse of Tibetan Buddhism, and daily life buzzes through the narrow streets. This day allows our bodies to acclimatize to the thin air, preparing us for the challenging Thorong La Pass that awaits.

From Manang, we begin a gradual ascent to Yak Kharka today. We climb steadily but slowly, going through the Marsyangdi River, which leads us through extensive alpine terrain. As the altitude increases, we notice fewer trees and increasingly open, starry meadows.

Yak Kharka, as the name suggests, is a pastureland where yaks graze peacefully against a backdrop of towering peaks. The settlement is small, with a few teahouses, but the views are immense. Annapurna III and Gangapurna stand tall on the horizon. This shorter day is designed to aid acclimatization, allowing us to adjust to the altitude without overexertion. Overnight stay in Yak Kharka.

The trek today is not very long but takes us closer to the base of the Thorong La Pass. We climb slowly, crossing high-altitude grasslands and boulder fields. The Marsyangdi River is now reduced to a small stream, and the landscape has an extraterrestrial look to it.

Thorong Phedi, meaning “foot of the hill,” is our stop for the night. Some trekkers choose to continue to High Camp, but staying here allows us to rest well before tomorrow’s big challenge. From Thorong Phedi, the peaks look incredibly close, and the anticipation of crossing the famous Thorong La Pass (5416 m) builds excitement.

This is one of the toughest and most rewarding days of the whole Manaslu Annapurna Circuit trek. We rise early, before sunrise, for our slow and steady climb up to Thorong La Pass, the highest point on the trek at 5,416 meters. The path is steep and arduous, but with every step, the horizon slowly opens out and the summits shine more and more invitingly in the early morning sun.

At the summit, red and white prayer flags wave in the wind, celebrating our triumph. From this point, there is a view of an ocean of Himalayan giants, with the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges topping the skyline. After relishing this experience, we begin the long descent to Muktinath, a sacred site for Hindus and Buddhists alike. In the late afternoon, we reach the Muktinath Temple, famous for its burning flame and 108 spouts of water. This is both a physical and spiritual highlight of the trek.

Today's trek, after yesterday's triumph, appears more relaxed. We trek gently downhill over desolate land, passing through small villages and wide valleys. The strong winds of the Kali Gandaki Valley greet us as we enter Jomsom, the headquarters of the Mustang district.

Jomsom is a bustling town renowned for its apple orchards and its untamed beauty. The landscape is about dusty land and snow-capped mountains. Here, we can go to the marketplace, savor fresh apple products, and experience the unique Mustang atmosphere. Overnight stay at Jomsom.

In the morning, you take a short but scenic flight from Jomsom to Pokhara and bid farewell to the soaring mountains and enter the green, verdant valley of lakes. The 20-minute flight offers stunning airborne vistas of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, a final Himalayan farewell from above.

In Pokhara, you'll finally relax after weeks of trekking. You can spend the afternoon strolling along Phewa Lake, taking a boat ride, or hiking to the Peace Pagoda for an eagle's view of the valley. Pokhara is a trekkers' paradise, with cozy cafés, lake-view restaurants, and chances to rest.

After a night's rest at Pokhara, you embark on the journey back to Kathmandu today. It's a 6–7 hour drive on the Prithvi Highway, running parallel to rivers, rice fields, and hill villages. It's a scenic drive that allows you to reflect on the incredible journey you've just undertaken, bypassing the Manaslu region into the Annapurna Circuit and braving Thorong La Pass.

You will be in Kathmandu late in the afternoon, and the familiar vibe of the city greets you again. Rest at your hotel, take a warm shower, or stroll around Thamel for some souvenir shopping. A farewell dinner, arranged by Himalayan Recreation Treks, can be planned in the evening to celebrate your adventure, and you get to share experiences and memories with other travelers.

It's the final day of your wonderful Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek. Based on your return flight, you will be taken to Tribhuvan International Airport. As you leave, you have not just photographs but also the spirit of the Himalayas, the welcome of the mountains, and the sense of pride of having done two of Nepal's finest trekking circuits on a single adventure.

Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek - 23 Days FAQs

                                                • The Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek combines two iconic routes into one epic journey. You’ll experience the remote beauty of the Manaslu region, cross two high-altitude passes (Larkya La and Thorong La), and explore the cultural richness of the Annapurna region. It’s a trek that offers adventure, culture, and natural beauty in one unforgettable package.

                                                • Yes, you have customizable itineraries to suit your style. If you want to add extra days in the Tsum Valley, a side trip to Tilicho Lake, or adjust the pace, we can customize the trek to your requirements.

                                                • While trekking experience is preferred, it is not required. Physical fitness and endurance are, however, necessary as a result of the challenging nature of the trek. Pre-training by way of cardio and strength training will make trekking more enjoyable for you.

                                                • The maximum altitude of the Manaslu and Annapurna circuit trek is Thorong La Pass at an elevation of 5,416 meters. It is a challenging but thrilling high-altitude pass. The pass has a breathtaking view of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, and it's a trekking highlight.

                                                • Our package is 23 days, with the arrival and departure days included. The trek has enough acclimatization for you to adjust to the high altitude, covering both the Manaslu and Annapurna areas, and a relaxing pace to be savored during the journey.

                                                • Yes, altitude sickness is a possibility, especially when trekking over Thorong La Pass (5,416m). To minimize the risk, there are acclimatization days built into the itinerary, and our guides are trained to recognize signs. You need to drink plenty of water, keep a steady pace, and inform your guide if you are not well.

                                                • Yes, charging facilities are available in most teahouses, but they may charge a small fee. It's a good idea to have a portable power bank as a backup, especially for longer days on the trail.

                                                • Yes, travel insurance is mandatory. Your policy should cover:

                                                  • High-altitude trekking up to 5,416 meters.
                                                  • Emergency evacuation and medical expenses.

Make sure you carry a copy of your insurance policy and emergency contact details.

                                                • The trek goes through regions with rich cultural heritage. To be respectful:

                                                  • Dress modestly when visiting monasteries or villages.
                                                  • Ask permission before taking photos of people or religious sites.
                                                  • Purchase locally made products to help support local communities.
                                                  • Leave no trace by removing all trash with you and not harassing wildlife.
                                                • Usually our group sizes are small, usually 1-10 trekkers, to allow individual attention and a more intimate experience.

                                                Know Before You Go

When Is the Best Time for the Manaslu Circuit Trek with Annapurna?

Choosing the right season is crucial for a safe and enjoyable Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the two best seasons for trekking to Manaslu Circuit with Annapurna.

In the spring, the hills are covered with rhododendrons and wildflowers in blossom, and the weather is stable with warm days and cold nights. The skies are usually clear, with superb mountain views of Manaslu, Annapurna, and dozens of other surrounding peaks.

Similarly, autumn offers crisp and clean air, trails are dry, and the weather is stable. The Himalayan vistas are at their best, and a majority of trekkers like to do the trek in this season.

While it is possible to trek beyond the above-mentioned seasons, some challenges come with it. Winter trekking (December–February) is cold and hazardous, with the passes blocked by heavy snow. Similarly, the monsoon period (June–August) is a season of landslides, leeches, and muddy trails, making trekking unsafe.

What Are the Accommodations on the Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek Package?

Accommodation on the Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek is an experience in itself. You will be staying in the teahouses, which are simple but warm, typically family-run by mountain locals who welcome trekkers with open arms.

The rooms typically have two single beds, a mattress, a blanket, a pillow, and shared toilets. Don't expect luxury, but a decent place to rest after a day of trekking is what you can expect.

In larger villages like Samagaon, Manang, or Pisang, you can have slightly better facilities like hot showers, charging facilities, and even Wi-Fi (for a small charge). But as we go higher, the facilities become more limited, and at times, just a cozy common dining hall warmed by a yak-dung fire is available.

Food & Drinking Water on the trekking to Manaslu Annapurna circuit

Food plays a major role in keeping your energy levels up during the Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek, and our package includes three meals a day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The menu for breakfast usually includes:

                                                • Porridge
                                                • Tibetan bread
                                                • Chapati or pancakes
                                                • Eggs (fried, boiled, scrambled, or omelets)
                                                • Toast with jam, honey
                                                • Tea or coffee

                                                For lunch, you can expect:

                                                • Dal bhat (rice, lentil soup, curry, and pickles)
                                                • Fried rice
                                                • Noodles
                                                • Thukpa (Tibetan noodle soup), etc.

In the lower altitude, you can get momo (dumplings) or spaghetti as well. Dinner menus are identical to lunch, but typically with more variety.

The favorite of the trekkers is dal bhat because it has unlimited refills and serves the best for high-altitude trekking. You will also be getting a warm tea after each meal to keep your body warm and hydrated.

There is clean drinking water throughout the Manaslu and Annapurna Circuit trekking route. All teahouses provide either boiled water at an extra cost or bottled mineral water that can be bought. But bottled water becomes more expensive as you climb higher, and it is not eco-friendly.

For safety and eco-friendly reasons, we recommend bringing water purification tablets or a refillable filter bottle so that you can replenish from local tap water or teahouse supplies. This way, you will have an ongoing supply of safe drinking water and also reduce the creation of plastic waste in the mountains.

How Difficult Are the Manaslu Circuit & Annapurna Circuit Treks?

The Manaslu Circuit & Annapurna Circuit Trek is challenging but one of the most rewarding treks in Nepal. The trek touches two major Himalayan passes: Larkya La (5,160m) on the Manaslu side and Thorong La (5,416 m) on the Annapurna side.

Both require good acclimatization and physical fitness, as trekking days can be 5–7 hours on average, whereas there are some longer days up to 8–9 hours. The trails are bumpy and often steep and pass through remote villages where facilities are limited.

Unlike the Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp trek, where luxury lodges are the standard, here you'll have to be ready for less luxurious living conditions. This is what makes the trek best suited for individuals who value adventure, nature, and culture over comfort.

With the guidance of our experienced guide, proper acclimatization, and some preparation, the Manaslu Circuit trek with Annapurna can be done by every individual who is in good physical condition.

What is altitude sickness, and how can it be prevented during the Manaslu Annapurna Circuit trek?

Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness, is a condition that happens when your body has trouble adjusting to the lower amounts of oxygen present at high elevations.

It is a common and widely recognized issue that frequently occurs during high-altitude treks, including the Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek. However, with the right precautions and measures, it is completely manageable.

Some of the symptoms include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and breathlessness. The most crucial thing to prevent altitude sickness is acclimatization days, which we have plenty of in our itinerary. Additionally, we recommend you drink plenty of water, refrain from alcohol consumption, and walk at your own pace.

As our guides are well-trained to recognize different symptoms of altitude sickness, they will closely observe your health throughout the trek to make sure you are in good health.

How Do You Prepare for the Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek?

The Manaslu and Annapurna Circuit Trek is not a light trek, and preparation is necessary. Start physical conditioning at least 2–3 months before the trek. This can include cardio activities like hiking, jogging, or biking, combined with strength training to build endurance.

Mental preparation is equally important. You should be prepared for long trekking days, high altitudes, and basic teahouse accommodations. Acclimatization days are built into the itinerary to help your body adjust, but staying hydrated and pacing yourself are essential.

With good preparation, determination, and the support of our guide, you’ll be ready to conquer both the Manaslu and Annapurna trails in one unforgettable journey.

What is the transportation for the Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek?

Transport for the Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek typically includes both public buses and private vehicles.

Once we complete the Manaslu section and join the Annapurna Circuit, the journey back usually ends in Pokhara or Jomsom. Our itinerary includes a brief domestic flight to Pokhara from Jomsom for more comfort and time saving. Then, from Pokhara, you will be heading to Kathmandu via a bus ride.
