Once checked in and settled, relax and acclimate to the local time. Kathmandu is vibrant and a perfect destination to soak up the city atmosphere before your spiritual pilgrimage begins.

  • Max Altitude:1,350m
  • Accommodation:3 Star Hotel
  • Meals:Breakfast

Day 02:Chinese Visa Application & Documents

We focus today on organizing all the entry procedures into Tibet for the Kailash Overland Tour. Your documents and passport are processed through the Chinese Embassy. You will provide biometric information and complete necessary forms, so documents are ready for trouble-free travel.

As your documents are processed at the embassy, take it easy, walk around nearby, or have a casual coffee in Thamel. This is a leisure day, allowing you to prepare yourself mentally for the spiritual process that lies ahead. Our staff takes care to do things properly and efficiently so that the visa application process is smooth for the group.

  • Max Altitude:1,350m
  • Accommodation:3 Star Hotel
  • Meals:Breakfast

Day 03:Cultural Sightseeing Tour & Visa Processing

As we wait for your Chinese visa to be granted, we take on a half-day cultural tour of Kathmandu's sacred sites. We first visit the Pashupatinath Temple, the most revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Then, we stroll around Boudhanath Stupa, South Asia's largest Buddhist stupa, which radiates spiritual energy. Finally, a visit to Guhyeshwari Temple gives a glimpse into yet another major pilgrimage site.

The remainder of the day is free. You could start arranging your gear for the Kailash Overland Yatra by road or do some last-minute shopping. The day is balanced perfectly between cultural immersion and real-time preparation, acclimatizing you to Nepal before the Tibet journey.

  • Max Altitude:1,350m
  • Accommodation:3 Star Hotel
  • Meals:Breakfast

Day 04:Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) Visit & Visa Collection

Once your Chinese visa is arranged, we will go to collect it and make all the final arrangements for your 16-day Mount Kailash Manasarovar Tour itinerary. It is also the day for the visit to Swayambhunath, the Monkey Temple, which occupies a hilltop, offering great views of Kathmandu. The stupa has both Hindu and Buddhist symbolisms and offers a serene spiritual experience prior to embarking on the overland adventure.

Following the tour, you return to the hotel, finish packing, and rest. This is the last evening in Kathmandu before taking to the road.

  • Max Altitude:1,350m
  • Accommodation:3 Star Hotel
  • Meals:Breakfast

Day 05:Drive from Kathmandu to Timure

Today is the start of the overland journey to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. We drive on Prithvi Highway, a beautiful scenic route, along the Trishuli River through rolling green hills, cultivated terrains, and small rural villages. The journey is long but well worth it, offering a look at Nepal's tranquil countryside.

In the evening, we reach Timure, a serene town near the Nepal-Tibet border. The mood shifts here to serene Himalayan villages from concrete cities. A night in a local guesthouse offers time to experience Nepalese hospitality and prepare for the high-altitude sections of the pilgrimage that lie ahead.

  • Max Altitude:2,963m
  • Accommodation:Tourist Standard Hotel
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 06:Cross Border at Rasuwagadhi and Drive to Kerung

We drive today to Rasuwagadhi and complete Nepalese immigration formalities. Once we cross the Friendship Bridge, you are in Tibet and need to clear customs on the Chinese side. The journey then continues onto Kerung, the first Tibetan destination for the Manasarovar Overland Tour.

Kerung is a small Tibetan town, giving a glimpse into the life of the people on this ancient trade route. You can absorb the Tibetan architecture, local markets, and the serenity of the surrounding mountains today before the journey continues.

  • Max Altitude:2,700m
  • Time:7-8 hours
  • Accommodation:Tourist Standard Hotel
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 07:Acclimatization Day in Kerung

After some days of travel, today is a rest day for acclimatization. We lounge around, allowing our bodies to adjust to the higher altitude of 2,700 meters. Short walks in Kerung keep circulation going while keeping exertion to a minimum.

This is also a day to be one with Tibetan culture. Local markets can be visited as you explore the town. This day allows you to get used to the surroundings and culture of Tibet while taking the rest that is much needed.

  • Max Altitude:2,700m
  • Time:6-7 hours
  • Accommodation:Tourist Standard Hotel
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 08:Drive to Saga

We continue on the overland journey on the high Tibetan plateau today. The road to Saga is stunning, crossing broad open plains, white-roofed peaks, and an occasional herd of wild yaks or Tibetan antelopes. The scenery is otherworldly, with deep blue skies above bare hills and old nomadic villages.

Saga, a small Tibetan town, is the second-to-last big stop prior to the spiritual center of the Mount Kailash Manasarovar Pilgrimage. One night in a guesthouse here is enough to rest and acclimatize at high altitude while mentally preparing for the future pilgrimage. It's a quiet night suitable for contemplation and acclimatization.

  • Max Altitude:4,450m
  • Time:6-7 hours
  • Accommodation:Tourist Standard Hotel
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 09:Drive to Lake Manasarovar via Paryang

The journey continues as we make our way to Lake Manasarovar along huge plateaus with few Tibetan nomad encampments today. Along the way, today, we get to witness the first distant view of Mount Kailash.

Before reaching Lake Mansarovar, we pass through several Tibetan villages along the way, and upon arrival at Lake Manasarovar, you encounter one of the planet's most sacred lakes. You can reflect for a while, stroll around its pristine shores, and soak up spiritual energies. We will stay overnight in the Chiu Monastery area for serene contemplation under the illumination of Mount Kailash.

  • Max Altitude:4,556m
  • Time:6-7 hours
  • Accommodation:Tourist Standard Hotel
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 10:Manasarovar Rituals and Drive to Darchen

This day is one of the spiritual gems of the trip. We perform sacred rituals in Lake Manasarovar, like a holy dip in the sacred waters, meditation, and the collection of sacred water. These rituals give a deep sense of introspection and a feeling of being connected with the divine power of Mount Kailash.

Next, we take a drive to Darchen, a small village near the base of Mount Kailash. Darchen is the start point of the spiritual Kora trek. Once we arrive in Darchen, the day is spent getting ready for the remainder of the trek, checking equipment, and resting.

  • Max Altitude:4,575m
  • Time:6-7 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 11:Trek from Darchen to Dirapuk

The Kailash Kora officially commences today as we make our way to Dirapuk from Darchen. We walk from Darchen through Barkha Valley along the sacred Tarboche flagpole, a center of pilgrimage. The route follows the Lachu River, gradually revealing the majestic north face of Mount Kailash.

After 6–7 hours of trekking, we arrive at Dirapuk, with the beautiful cliffs and serene valleys leading to an almost surreal atmosphere in the surroundings. Basic guesthouses are available here for a stayover, though the real treasure is the awesome view and deep sense of spiritual fulfillment achieved at this altitude.

  • Max Altitude:5,210m
  • Time:6-7 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea house basic
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 12:Trek to Zuthulphuk through Dolma La Pass

This is the toughest day of the Kora, but it is also a spiritually charged one. We begin the walk early in the morning from Dirapuk and make our way to the highest point of the journey, Dolma La Pass, at 5,630 meters.

The climb is steep and challenging, but to stand on top is an experience that will change your life. Once we arrive at the pass, take some time for meditation and reflection on the journey so far. We then proceed to Zuthulphuk, where basic guesthouse facilities are available.

  • Max Altitude:5,630m
  • Time:8-9 hours
  • Accommodation:Tea House Basic
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 13:Finishing the Trek, Drive back to Saga

On the 13th day of our itinerary, we conclude the Kailash kora. The final section of the Kora is relatively short, approximately 2–3 walking hours. We complete our pilgrimage and return to our car, driving back to Saga to enjoy a leisurely evening.

This is a day of reflection, where you can balance the spiritual and physical experience of the trek. Saga provides comfort and time to enjoy Tibetan hospitality, preparing for the journey onward towards Nepal.

  • Max Altitude:4,640M
  • Time:4-5 hours
  • Accommodation:Tourist Standard Hotel
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 14:Drive to Kerung

We say goodbye to Saga today and drive back through the picturesque Tibetan landscape to Kerung. The drive offers last glimpses of high-altitude deserts, nomadic settlements, and snowcapped peaks.

This is the last evening on Tibetan soil, allowing for introspection on the sacred pilgrimage. You can interact with the locals, enjoy Tibetan architecture, or just sit back and unwind, soaking in the spiritual atmosphere before returning to Nepal.

  • Max Altitude:2,700m
  • Time:6-7 hours
  • Accommodation:Tourist Standard Hotel
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 15:Drive Back to Kathmandu

After breakfast in Kerung, we begin the journey back to Nepal via the Rasuwagadhi border again. The immigration and customs process is completed smoothly with the help of your guide, so rest assured for a smooth return.

Once you cross the border, the journey is along the Trishuli Valley past dense hills, rivers, and countryside towns differing from Tibet's high-altitude landscape. By late afternoon, we arrive in Kathmandu, and the comfort of a city hotel is yours to enjoy. An evening farewell dinner is prepared to mark the success of the Mount Kailash Overland Tour.

  • Max Altitude:1,350M
  • Time:8-9 hours
  • Accommodation:3 Star Hotel
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Kailash Overland Tour Difficulty & Kora (Parikrama) Details

The Kailash Overland Tour is moderately challenging, mainly due to the high altitudes rather than long trekking days. Most of the journey is by comfortable vehicle, but the highlight — the three-day Kailash Kora (Parikrama) — involves sustained physical activity.

  • Daily Trek Duration: 6–8 hours of walking each day over uneven terrain, rocky paths, and occasional steep sections.
  • Highest Point: Dolma La Pass at 5,630 meters (18,471 feet), the most demanding portion of the Kora.
  • Acclimatization: The itinerary includes rest and acclimatization days, allowing your body to gradually adapt to thinner air and higher altitudes.
  • Physical Preparation: Travelers with moderate fitness levels can complete the Kora with preparation. Recommended activities include walking, light trekking, jogging, cycling, or strength training prior to the tour.
  • Mental Readiness: The trek is spiritually rewarding but mentally intense due to high-altitude conditions, long hours, and basic guesthouse accommodation. A calm, patient mindset helps immensely.

Safety and Support: Our trained guides monitor your condition during the Kora, advise on pacing, and ensure proper rest and hydration. Emergency oxygen and first-aid kits are carried at all times.

By taking it slow, following guides’ instructions, and preparing physically, most travelers successfully complete the Kailash Kora while enjoying its spiritual and scenic rewards.

Altitude Sickness on Kailash Overland Yatra

Altitude sickness, also called Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), occurs when your body struggles to adjust to high elevations. While not everyone is affected, travelers may experience symptoms due to the high-altitude passes (up to 5,630 meters) during the Kora.

Symptoms to Watch For:

  • Headache, nausea, vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue and breathlessness
  • Dizziness or difficulty sleeping

How We Help You Stay Safe:

  • Acclimatization Days: Strategically placed rest days help your body adapt gradually to higher altitudes.
  • Hydration & Nutrition: Drink plenty of water and eat light, nutritious meals; avoid alcohol and heavy foods.
  • Emergency Measures: Guides carry oxygen cylinders and first-aid kits; monitoring is continuous.
  • Pacing: Walk slowly, take breaks as needed, and listen to your body’s signals.
  • Medical Advice: Our guides are trained to recognize AMS signs and act immediately if assistance is needed.

How to Prepare Yourself for the Kailash Overland Tour

Preparing for the high-altitude Kailash Manasarovar Overland Tour is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience. While there are only three walking days for the Kailash Kora (Parikrama), these days are physically and mentally demanding due to high altitude, long hours, and challenging terrain.

Physical Preparation:

  • Perform cardio exercises such as hiking, jogging, or cycling to build stamina.
  • Strengthen your legs, core, and back by walking with a loaded backpack, simulating the Kora trek.
  • Gradually increase your endurance to handle 6–8 hours of walking per day at high altitude.

Mental Preparation:

  • Prepare for long drives at high altitudes, basic guesthouse accommodations, and colder temperatures.
  • Cultivate patience and mental resilience to fully enjoy the spiritual and scenic journey.

Tips During the Tour:

  • Stay hydrated and eat light, nutritious meals.
  • Pace your energy levels, take rest breaks, and listen to your body.
  • Follow your guides’ advice closely, especially during high passes like Dolma La.

With proper physical and mental preparation, the Kailash Overland Yatra becomes a safe, spiritually fulfilling, and unforgettable adventure. For personalized guidance on preparation, reach out to our team directly.
